Mara Sov will Return...Eventually

Destiny | The Taken King

Last time we saw Mara Sov, Queen of the Reef, her forces were decimated by The Taken King. After that tragic engagement off the rings of Saturn, she was presumed dead. But, through Grimoire and speculation, most assume her to be alive. Nearly two years since the launch of The Taken King, we’ve gotten all but confirmation from Bungie that this is the case.

Until today.

In Bungie’s weekly stream, the studio featured Kirsten Potter, Mara Sov’s voice actor, and the Bungie audio team. Joining her, was CJ Cowan, Destiny 2’s Creative Story lead. They discussed the tumultuous nature of Destiny’s development. After the departure of Joseph State, much of the story changed. The “Pirate Queen” and her brother “The Crow” eventually became the Mara and Uldren Sovs we see in vanilla Destiny.

As for her future, he had this to say:

“This is totally spoiling like Destiny 2020 or something but when we get to that world down the road where that original pirate Queen comes out, I think it’s going to be a really powerful moment.”

After waiting two years for news on this front, this is both disappointing and exciting. It seems that “Destiny 2020” signals that she will not be returning in Destiny 2. But it also tells us that Bungie has something greater planned for her. Bungie’s plans for Destiny’s larger story—across multiple entries—is something of a mystery.

While the term “10 Year Plan” was famously used to frame the original game, it was thrown into jeopardy following Staten’s exit. What was known as the “Supercut” of Destiny, was thrown out. Even Marty O’Donnell’s “10 Year Score” known as “The Music of the Spheres” was gradually replaced in the game’s expansions.

But it seems that Destiny has a new roadmap, and Bungie has a clear vision of what it looks like. As fans of the game, this is heartening to see, even if it means waiting a few more years for a character like Mara Sov to return.
